As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I think it’s important for an athlete to have a little swagger. It’s important that they believe THEY are the best player on the court and THEY are the player to beat.
Call it “confidence on steroids” if you will, but supreme confidence can be a huge asset to an athlete… against an opponent that is, but NEVER against one of their own teammates.
But even against an opponent, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance.
Dictionary.com defines arrogance as: “…an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner…”
Arrogance is disrespectful – period!
An arrogant athlete is easy to spot in a group and even easier to dislike. Arrogance is a chemistry killer on a team because arrogance is divisive to a team. Arrogance shows a lack of respect for fellow teammates.
When “confidence” starts to look down on younger or less-talented teammates, it’s no longer confidence… it has morphed into arrogance. And there is no room for it on a team.
