CHARACTER vs. TALENT

With tryouts just two weeks away, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why, each season, coaches allow themselves to fall into the trap of choosing talent over character.

Were John Wooden's teams so good (10 NCAA Championships in 12 seasons and four perfect 30-0 seasons) because they were loaded with talent or because the roster was filled with players with character?

Don't get me wrong, talent is important. But an athlete with strong character is far more valuable to a team than a talented player without character. A player with character gives 100% effort in everything they do and they do the right thing off the court, even when no one is around to see them.

I am convinced that character is the ingredient that helps develop talent to it’s fullest potential. Whereas talent can never help develop character.
