THE CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

I love Christmas and the spirit of giving it inspires. Remember when you were younger and your parents would have you write out your wish list and then they sent it to Santa?  And then somehow, ‘magically’ on Christmas morning, you got all the stuff you wanted?  Well, that same mindset still exists today with many players.

Although I rarely get asked by a female player, I have been asked by a couple of guys (and even some coaches) how they can improve any number of different skills. Everybody`s "wish list" is a little different – some are thoughtful and some are ... interesting.

Players usually want to know how to increase their vertical, or how to improve their shooting in a short period of time.  Rarely do they ask how to execute a proper jump stop, a bounce pass, or how to use a proper fake.

Some players want to know that 'one drill' that will turn them into a superstar shooter or ball handler.  Although it is good to add drills to improve your arsenal – don’t forget that knowing HOW to play is so much more important than being a good shooter or a good dribbler.

The amazing thing about the game of basketball is there are NO short cuts.  It’s different than Christmas.  There is nothing "magical" that is going to happen in one day, nothing that is going to show up under your Christmas tree that will make you instantly better.

Santa Claus is not going to bring you an amazing vertical or a pure jump shot. Rudolph will not make your team a group of turnover free, tenacious defenders. There is no one tip or one special play that will make a player or team instantly better.  Just hard work and repetitions, over and over again, that’s the only way.
