Thousands of players go passively for offensive rebounds and coaches often let players get away with that passive effort. Perhaps the reason is that defensive rebounds are expected, or easier to get. But in most cases, the reason that more offensive rebounds are not grabbed is simply that players don’t try hard enough to get them.
Spin Off the First Obstacle (SOFO) is something you should try to do to improve your offensive rebounding. Spinning off the first obstacle requires that you go seeking the ball and that you try to avoid a blockout (boxout) to get it. Now not every rebound will end up in your hands whether you SOFO or not, but if you are constantly spinning off the first obstacle, over the course of a season you are going to get a lot of more offensive rebounds than you normally would have. And remember, offensive rebounds are “another” offensive possession under your basket.
