The key to good defensive position is balance. A player has to be able to move forward, backward, laterally -- all with quickness and agility. The center of gravity has to be kept low while the player is poised, ready to move in any direction.
In the basic defensive position, players should place their feet approximately a shoulder's width apart, with hips low and back fairly straight. Players should be balanced on the balls of their feet for even body weight distribution.
Even while keep low, players have to keep their heads up because the position of the head is important to body balance. Players can't let their heads get too far forward or to one side because they'll lose that balance.
