The POWER of VISION

When we talk about vision on the court, we are usually referring to the ability to observe the ever-changing action on the court and spot the movement of both your teammates and opponents and use them to your advantage.

But there is also a different kind of vision that only the greatest players possess, and it isn’t something they are born with... it’s something they learn through experience.  It’s the vision that can communicate with others on the basketball court…it’s “talking” with your eyes.

When asked "what makes you a great basketball player?"  Michael Jordan answered “…to me, vision is the biggest weapon of all.  It captures any weak points that you can attack and advantages that you can exploit.  More importantly, it implies certain messages to all the other players on the court.”

Let's look at at two examples of “talking” with your eyes:

"You can't get past me."
Stare right into the eyes of the offensive player you are guarding (even crack a little smile) and let her know that you dare her to try and get past you.  This aggressive stare makes the offensive player rethink before she attempts to make a move and when she hesitates, she will likely lose her ambition.  Make her question her own confidence.

"I have given up and I’m exhausted."
When you avoid eye contact with your defender by looking down when you are not holding the ball, the defender may think that you are exhausted and relax and even play off of you a little.  That is when you should suddenly burst towards your sweet spot and be ready.

Be sure to use your vision…it gives you an advantage.
