DON'T MAKE IT EASY

Most players, even lazy ones, give the impression they are ready to play good defense during the first five seconds of any defensive play (including boxing out).  So consequently, any shot taken in the first five seconds or so (the first pass) is likely to be well defended and followed by five defenders that are not only ready to box out but also ready to start their fast break.

So taking a shot on the first pass makes it easy for the defense.  No running across the floor chasing the ball, no cuts to have to guard against, no screens to get over or through, no man to have to guard, no fakes to worry about.  One pass and the shot goes up and then it's 50/50 as to who gets the rebound.

So it should be obvious...the first-pass shot should be refused (even if it is a good look) unless there is no time left on the clock.  The same shot can still be taken later when the defenders are out of position to box out and start their break.

Don't get in such a hurry that we start throwing up a shot everytime we have an open look.
